چکیده

The authors present a manufacturing cost analysis for producing thin-film indium phosphide modules by combining a novel thin-film vapor–liquid–solid (TF-VLS) growth process with a standard monolithic module platform. The example cell structure is ITO/n-TiO2/p-InP/Mo. For a benchmark scenario of 12% efficient modules, the module cost is estimated to be $0.66/W(DC) and the module cost is calculated to be around $0.36/W(DC) at a long-term potential efficiency of 24%. The manufacturing cost for the TF-VLS growth portion is estimated to be ~$23/m, a significant reduction compared with traditional metalorganic chemical vapor deposition. The analysis here suggests the TF-VLS growth mode could enable lower-cost, high-efficiency III-V photovoltaics compared with manufacturing methods used today and open up possibilities for other optoelectronic applications as well. BAPVC Annual Project Report Project Title: Thin-Film Vapor-Liquid-Solid Growth of Optoelectronic Quality InP on Metal substrates PI:

The work focuses on understanding and characterization of the thin-film vapor-liquid-solid (TFVLS) growth technique as a low-cost process technology for III-V thin film solar cells on metal/glass substrates. In the last review period, we have focused on understanding and controlling the nucleation events of TF-VLS InP. Furthermore, optoelectronic characterization of the grown InP has been perfo...

Deterministic Nucleation of InP on Metal Foils with the Thin-Film Vapor−Liquid−Solid Growth Mode

A method for growth of ultralarge grain (>100 μm) semiconductor thin-films on nonepitaxial substrates was developed via the thin-film vapor−liquid−solid growth mode. The resulting polycrystalline films exhibit similar optoelectronic quality as their single-crystal counterparts. Here, deterministic control of nucleation sites is presented by substrate engineering, enabling user-tuned internuclei...

Nonstoichiometric composition shift in physical vapor deposition of CdTe thin films

While it is being debated whether Cd vacancy is an effective p-dopant in CdTe, and whether CdTe thin film in solar energy application should be Cd-deficient or Cd-rich, in the theory of CdTe physical vapor deposition (PVD) it has been assumed that both the source material and the thin film product is stoichiometric. To remediate the lack of effective theory, a new PVD model for CdTe photovoltai...

Transient Temperature During the Vaporization of Liquid on a Pulsed Laser-Heated Solid Surface

The thermodynamics of the rapid vaporization of a liquid on a solid surface heated by an excimer laser pulse is studied experimentally. The transient temperature field is measured by monitoring the photothermal reflectance of an embedded thin film in nanosecond time resolution. The transient reflectivity is calibrated by considering a temperature gradient across the sample based on the static m...

Effect of nanostructures on evaporation and explosive boiling of thin liquid films: a molecular dynamics study

Molecular dynamics simulations have been employed to investigate the boiling phenomena of thin liquid films adsorbed on a nanostructured solid surface. The molecular system was comprised of the following: solid platinum wall, liquid argon, and argon vapor. A few layers of the liquid argon were placed on the nanoposts decorated solid surface. The nanoposts height was varied keeping the liquid fi...
